Faerie Glen properties and their boundaries

Faerie Glen is a settled Pretoria East suburb with many freestanding family homes, a fair number of cluster developments and, on its edge, the Faerie Glen Nature Reserve. Some properties back onto the reserve, a stream bank or other open ground, and those back boundaries are often the ones owners worry about most.

Back walls on these properties can be lower or older than the street-facing wall, and some are not walls at all but mesh or palisade. An installer will walk the whole boundary to see what each section is made of before suggesting a system. See the Faerie Glen area page for more on the suburb.

Trees, creepers and the fence line

Mature trees and creepers are part of what makes Faerie Glen gardens pleasant, but a branch that touches the strands drains the fence and sets off the alarm. A good design keeps the wire clear of growth, which may mean some pruning before installation and an agreement on who trims along the fence afterwards.

Where a tree overhangs a long stretch, a freestanding fence set slightly inside the boundary, or brackets angled away from the growth, can keep the strands clear. Our article on wall-top versus freestanding electric fences covers both options.

What changes the price in Faerie Glen

Quotes depend on the property, so this website does not list prices. In Faerie Glen these are the usual variables:

  • Whether the back boundary is a wall, a palisade or mesh, since each needs a different fixing.
  • Pruning or clearing needed so that no growth can reach the strands.
  • Any boundary that runs down a slope, where brackets must follow the fall of the wall.
  • The number of zones, so a fault on the back boundary can be told apart from the street side.
  • An energizer sized for the length of fence, and a battery to carry it through outages.
  • Access to the back boundary if it can only be reached through the house or garden.

Certificate on completion

Once the fence is live, a registered installer should issue an Electric Fence System Certificate of Compliance. For new fences this is a legal requirement: the fence must comply with SANS 10222-3, and the user or lessor must hold a valid certificate (ECA(SA)). Do not settle the final account until you have it. Details are on the certificate of compliance service page. This is general information, not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

My property backs onto the nature reserve. Can I fence that boundary?

You can usually fence your own boundary. If you are unsure exactly where the boundary runs, confirm it from your property documents before work starts.

Will my trees need to be cut back?

Any branch that could touch the strands should be cleared. The installer will show you which growth is a problem.

Can a fence follow a sloping wall?

Yes. Brackets are set to follow the slope so the strands stay at an even height above the wall.
