What electric fence jobs look like here

The northern suburbs range from older areas with established family homes on generous stands to newer developments of townhouses and smaller estates. That range shows up in fence work. On older properties, many fences and energizers have been in place for years and are due for repair, a new energizer or a refresh of brackets and wire. On newer developments, the work is often a first installation or an extension around a complex.

Where a stand is large, the boundary is long, and the fence often has to cope with a mix of wall, palisade and open sections. Longer runs mean more strands of wire to check, more places for plants to touch, and a bigger load on the energizer and earth system.

The jobs people ask for most

  • Repairs to older fences: sagging or broken strands, cracked insulators and rusted brackets.
  • Energizer and battery replacement on fences that stop working in power cuts.
  • New installations on homes and complexes in newer developments.
  • Certificates of Compliance for houses being sold.
  • Splitting long single-zone fences into zones so faults are easier to find.

Long fences need good earthing

On a long fence, a weak earth system shows up as low voltage at the far end and alarms that come and go with the weather. An installer will check the earth spikes and add more where needed. Our guide to electric fence voltage and earthing explains why it matters. If your energizer is the problem, see energizer and battery replacement.

Repairs and the certificate

A repaired, restrung or extended electric fence must comply with SANS 10222-3, and the user or lessor must hold a valid Electric Fence System Certificate of Compliance, which only a registered Electric Fence System Installer may issue (source: ECA(SA)). Ask any installer for proof of registration before work starts, and ask whether the certificate is in the quote. This is general information, not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

Do you cover Akasia suburbs that are not listed?

Yes. Send your suburb through the contact form and we will check whether an installer covers it.

My old fence keeps failing. Should I repair it or start again?

It depends on the state of the brackets, wire and energizer. An installer can test the fence and tell you which parts are worth keeping.

Why does my fence show low voltage at the far end?

Common causes are a weak earth system, plants touching the strands, or an energizer that is too small for the length. The installer tests to find which.
