Older homes and mixed boundaries

Sinoville is one of Pretoria North's longer-established suburbs, and many of its freestanding homes were built decades ago on decent-sized stands. Boundaries vary: some are brick walls, some are precast panels and some are older mesh or palisade that was added over time.

Some properties still carry an old electric fence that no longer works, or brackets with no wire left on them. Whether that hardware can be used again or should come off is one of the first questions an installer will answer. More on the suburb is on the Sinoville area page.

Starting fresh or reusing old hardware

Reusing brackets only saves material if they are sound, correctly spaced and suited to the new design. Rusted or cracked brackets, or ones fixed into crumbling plaster, are better replaced. Mixing old and new hardware can also make it harder for the new fence to comply.

If the wall is too low or too weak, a freestanding fence on posts can be set just inside the boundary. Our article on wall-top versus freestanding fencing explains when each makes sense.

What moves a Sinoville quote

There are no set prices, and this website does not list any. The main things that change a Sinoville quote are:

  • Taking down an old, non-working fence and its brackets.
  • Whether existing brackets are sound enough to keep.
  • Repairs to plaster or wall tops before new brackets go on.
  • The length of the boundary and the number of strands.
  • Choice of energizer, and a battery so the fence keeps running in outages.
  • Earthing, which the installer plans for the new system rather than relying on an old earth.

Why the certificate matters

A new or re-installed fence must meet SANS 10222-3, and the user or lessor must hold a valid Electric Fence System Certificate of Compliance (ECA(SA)). If an old fence on the property never had a certificate on file, the new installation is a chance to put the paperwork in order. The registered installer issues the certificate after testing. See electric fence certificate of compliance. This is general information, not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

There is an old dead fence on my wall. Can it be fixed instead?

Sometimes. If the hardware is sound, a repair may work. If it is badly worn, a new installation is often cleaner. The installer will advise.

Do I need to fix my wall first?

Loose plaster or a broken wall top may need repair so that brackets hold firmly. The installer will point out what is needed.

Is a certificate needed if I only replace the old fence?

Yes. A new or re-installed fence needs a valid Electric Fence System Certificate of Compliance from a registered installer.
